About Malta
A series of rugged islands(Malta) set against the sparkling blue Mediterranean Sea, the Maltese archipelago lies 93 km south of Sicily and 288 km from the North African coast. There are three islands being Malta,Gozo and Comino,Malta the biggest and Comino the smallest. The island of Malta covers 246square miles, with a coastline of 136km.Gozo is just a quarter of this size, and barren-looking Comino-a designated nature reserve-is tiny by comparison. However the best diving Malta is in Gozo. The Malta archipelago consists for the most part of a limestone plateau with an an ironstone shoreline and a series of low hills. For centuries farmers cultivated the arid land(Malta)by creating terraces marked by drystone walls, many of which still criss-cross today.Gozo is the most fertile of the Malta islands, thanks to a rainwater-retaining of blue clay, and remains responsible for supplying much of the country`s vegetables.
Thanks to their strategic position, located almost at the centre of the Mediterranean, the Malta islands have attracted settlers and invaders thorughout the centuries, who in turn have left an abundance of historic sites for visitors to explore.Monumental remains believed to predate the Pyramids, baroque churches and cathedrals, and imposing towers and fortresses all feature among the many topside attractions of Malta and Gozo.
